As a single mom of three little ones, I’ve navigated the challenges of providing for my family while being there for my children. Like many single parents, I longed for financial freedom without sacrificing precious time with my little ones and I didn’t want to give up my dream of homeschooling once I became a single parent. That’s when I embarked on a journey to create passive income streams through blogging, affiliates, Pinterest, TikTok, and monetizing online products. Over the last four years, I have been able to support my family while pursuing our dreams such as traveling the world, homeschooling, and homesteading. Here are a few tips on how my fellow moms can harness the power of passive income to achieve financial freedom and work-life balance.
What is Passive Income, Really?
Passive income is money earned with minimal ongoing effort after the initial work is done. Unlike traditional income, where you trade time for money (like a 9-to-5 job or hourly freelancing), passive income allows you to generate revenue even when you’re not actively working. This can come from digital products, affiliate marketing, memberships, or automated courses—things that continue to sell or provide value long after you’ve created them. While passive income does require effort upfront, the key difference is that once it’s set up, it has the potential to bring in money with little maintenance, freeing up your time for what truly matters.
- Starting a Blog: Sharing Insights & Passions
My journey began with starting a blog. I chose topics I’m passionate about, such as parenting, education, and personal development. Your blog should reflect your interests, experiences, and expertise. Write engaging, informative content that resonates with your target audience and feels in alignment with your values and goals. Over time, your blog can become a valuable resource for others while creating potential income opportunities.
- Affiliate Marketing: Partnering with Brands
Affiliate marketing was a game-changer for me. By partnering with brands and promoting products I genuinely believe in, I earn commissions for every sale generated through my unique affiliate links. The key is authenticity (and of course my favorite word alignment) – recommend products you trust and that fits with your audience’s needs. Platforms like Amazon Associates, TikTok skip, and ShareASale offer numerous affiliate programs but you can always reach out to a brand you love – many have affiliate programs.
- Pinterest: A Visual Search Engine
Pinterest has been key in my journey to passive income. Create eye-catching pins (I use Canva) that link to your blog posts and affiliate products. Optimize your Pinterest profile with keywords relevant to your niche and your offerings. As your pins circulate on Pinterest, they drive traffic to your blog and increase affiliate sales, all while you focus on other tasks. I have pins I made years ago that still bring traffic to my blog and offerings.
- TikTok: Creating Community
Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok’s short-form videos offer an excellent opportunity to build a community and connect with a wide audience. Share tips, life hacks, and snippets of your daily life as a mom. I love sharing chats about parenting and wellness, creating day in the life vlogs, and sharing about our child led homeschooling journey. As your TikTok following grows, you can promote your blog, work with brands, and share affiliate products, expanding your passive income opportunities. For those not comfortable in front of the camera, you can create faceless accounts or rely more on blogging and Pinterest!
- Monetizing Online Products: Courses and eBooks
Create online products that assign with your own passions and cater to your audience’s needs. Use your expertise and life experience to develop courses, eBooks, or printables. These digital assets become passive income generators once they’re created. Platforms like Stanstore make it easy to sell and deliver your products. Amazon also has a program called KDP to allow you to self publish books, which I have loved.
- Building Your Own Products: Passion Meets Profit
Take the plunge and build your own products based on your passions and skills. Whether it’s crafting, digital art, or a unique service, your offerings can turn into lucrative ventures. Share your creations on your blog and social media, attracting a community who needs and supports your offerings.
- Scaling and Diversifying
Diversify your income streams to enhance financial stability. As your blog or other content gains traction, consider other revenue sources like sponsored content, YouTube, or collaborations with other creators. Over time, slowly expand your offerings showing the passive income to compound. Scaling your efforts gradually builds a robust passive income foundation. Over time, I have created offerings from a course on women finding their alignment to ebooks on unschooling, to activity packs for kids. All have brought in money over the last few years and continue to do so even though I only invested the time to create them at one point.
